Conservatives often argue that so-called ‘cancel culture’ suppresses free speech and unfairly targets right-wing views, particularly on university campuses. However, others view the right to boycott as an important form of protest that can hold the powerful to account. This chapter considers some high-profile cases of cancel culture that concern psychological issues, such as claims regarding gender identity and human hierarchies. Cases like those of academics Kathleen Stock and James Watson are frequently cited as evidence of an unreasoned liberal bias in universities, though the controversies they provoke are often more complex than mere political disagreement.
