Psychology’s Conservative Paradigms
摘要
Psychology’s pioneers, often from privileged backgrounds, shaped the field’s methods to favour conservative conclusions. This bias is evident in psychology’s over-reliance on quantification, which creates a misleading illusion of precision, and in its reductionism, which simplifies complex issues like depression by focusing on the individual rather than broader societal factors like poverty. Such individuocentrism resonates strongly with conservative worldviews because it places the blame for problems on personal traits, deflecting from systemic injustices. Despite claims of a ‘liberal’ bias today, psychology’s core practices remain fundamentally conservative.
