The energy sector is undergoing a digital transformation where data has a considerable impact on decision-making processes, operational efficiency and sustainability. This work offers an analysis of the digital transformation of notable companies in this sector, identifies key criteria for classifying them in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. The criteria we have retained are those that distinguish data driven companies from traditional companies; they include their ability to execute a strategy and the completeness of their vision. Our analysis focused on a randomly selected sample of companies; these are Engie, Enel, General Electric, Shell, Taqa Morocco and Amea Power. Thus, our research made it possible to classify these companies into four categories: leaders, challengers, visionaries and niche players, and also provides insights about how these companies use data to shape their strategies and how they impact the future of the energy sector. Our results show that ENEL, with its comprehensive data strategies and execution, stands out as a leader, while AMEA Power, despite its innovative approaches, occupies the niche players’ quadrant due to its limited scope and execution capabilities.
