In this chapter, we will first present the complexity of dignity in healthcare practice including our own research in hospices in Denmark. The philosophy and ideology of personalism will be discussed along with the concept of dignity from the perspective of patients and healthcare professionals. A model for dignity is proposed, which can be applied for guiding healthcare professionals’ reflections on dignity in end-of-life practice. The concept of recognition will be addressed as a method for nurturing dignity in the communication and the relationship between patient and healthcare professionals. Finally, the place of dignity in today’s healthcare will be highlighted.
