Commercial crowdfunding has converted into big business, and medical crowdfunding for assisting seriously ill patients is emulating the model. Crowdfunding to support scientific blogs or research projects also deserves mention. Such a context raises concerns, within the healthcare domain, about intellectual property rights, regulatory policies, and ethical issues like equity, justice, transparency, and environmental protection. Actual cases of cheating and fraud are still uncommon; however, they tend to increase given the appeal of easy money without strings attached, differently from what would happen in circumstances of a bank loan or a government grant. Inequity and marginalization of similarly needed patients with less access to such financing is another important point, as minorities and disenfranchised populations are typically less rewarded at crowdfunding platforms. A collective effort conducted by all stakeholders is advocated, aiming to establish a fair and ethical basis for medical crowdfunding.
