During millennia, humanity had little more than twigs to remove food sticking to the teeth, sand, salt, or crushed bones rubbed with the fingers to clean them, and herbal medicines to alleviate toothache. Typically, by age 30 or 40, most teeth are were gone. Modern dentistry has allowed functional dentition till advanced age, of course, surrounded by an array of industries and services, which profit from dental healthcare. Occasional misconduct is rather inevitable, as in other domains, reports focusing on such topics as equity and justice in access to dentists and treatments, among other issues, are reflected by rates of tooth decay and edentulism. Deficient informed consent for dental interventions, and a variety of misrepresentations and frauds by professionals, services, and industries are listed, ranging from faulty dental whitening and bleaching to misleading “perfect smile” advertising. An ethical consortium engaging all stakeholders should provide oversight as well as take steps toward corrective actions whenever misconduct is suspected.
