Optimizing road infrastructures, like traffic lights, is a cheap and effective way to face urban road congestion. Using an individual-centered approach, we model each intersection as an agent, and we focus on their control strategies. However, some might think that developing optimal strategies to maximize the fluidity of the traffic is a trivial task whereas this problem has remained open for 50 years. This demonstration aims to show and explain what is indeed difficult concerning intersection control with some simulated examples of traffic scenarios and control strategies.

摘要

Optimizing road infrastructures, like traffic lights, is a cheap and effective way to face urban road congestion. Using an individual-centered approach, we model each intersection as an agent, and we focus on their control strategies. However, some might think that developing optimal strategies to maximize the fluidity of the traffic is a trivial task whereas this problem has remained open for 50 years. This demonstration aims to show and explain what is indeed difficult concerning intersection control with some simulated examples of traffic scenarios and control strategies.
