Bamboo as a Sustainable Alternative for Developing Contemporary Jewelry: Advantages and Limitations
摘要
For centuries, jewelry has been designed and manufactured using noble metals such as gold, platinum, and silver by traditional craftsmen using artisanal and conventional manufacturing methods. In recent years, the consideration of unconventional and natural materials as alternative materials for jewelry manufacturing has gained notable interest owing to their unique aesthetic nature and sustainability attributes. One such versatile material is bamboo, which has been utilized for millennia by mankind in numerous day-to-day applications as it satisfies the criteria for structurally sound and functional material. Bamboo offers a multitude of features which can be beneficial for jewelry production, namely, by being eco-friendly, easily available, and lightweight. On the other hand, the durability of bamboo was found to be highly susceptible to degradation by biotic and abiotic factors arising from natural organisms and environmental conditions, respectively. Even though bamboo is considered one of the toughest natural materials given its unique microstructure and geometrical features, it cannot surpass the mechanical performance of modern engineering materials such as metal and alloys. This review study covers a holistic overview of the key benefits and limitations exhibited by bamboo material which can be useful for further development of contemporary jewelry. In terms of benefits, the physical, mechanical, and sustainability attributes are reviewed in detail, while common limitations affecting its performance such as its natural degradability, crack formation, and shrinkage behavior are further discussed. The review study also englobes some of the fundamental measures and design guidelines which could be adopted by jewelry manufacturers to address and circumvent some of the common limitations faced when dealing with bamboo material. Based on this study findings, the integration of bamboo material into modern jewelry creations has high potential to promote sustainable development in an industry highly influenced by unsustainably sourced materials, given its noteworthy aesthetic, physical, and mechanical attributes.
