Following World War I, in the ashes of the former Ottoman Empire, Ataturk, Kemal Pasha and his associates had to create a new Turkish Republican identity. They used two tools for this purpose: the creation of a new Turkish language, based on the Anatolian dialect of spoken Turkish to replace the court Ottoman Turkish, and Turkish folklore, particularly folk dance, folk music, and regional folk costumes. This paper describes and analyzes how the new Turkish Republic utilized these genres of folklore in new public contexts in order to create a viable Turkish identity and create a powerful sense of Turkish nationalism.
