Diversity in leadership is essential in all sectors of healthcare delivery, especially in the context of health disparities and the national pursuit of health equity. An extensive body of research has demonstrated the impact of diversity in health care, including on the care and experience of diverse patients. As such, it is important that aspiring, diverse healthcare professionals understand the healthcare leadership landscape, including how healthcare organizations are structured and managed. Health care is provided in many different settings, but hospitals play a unique and foundational role in the US healthcare system. This chapter will provide an overview of hospital leadership—including a description of the different types of hospitals that deliver care and key leadership positions within hospitals—as well as critical perspectives and lessons learned from the journey of experienced and successful Latino/a healthcare executives.
