Admissions is the portal to medicine. Every practicing physician came through an admissions process where a group of stakeholders selected them for the profession. The processes have been designed, managed, and held in place by leaders in academic medicine. As leaders have endeavored to ensure a physician workforce prepared to meet the needs of a diverse nation, the need for more representation among designers, gatekeepers, and stakeholders has become critical. Academic leaders who are prepared to engage in admissions can make significant contributions to access and equity in medicine by influencing and shaping the process of selecting the next generation of physicians. This chapter will cover the fundamentals of medical school admissions and provide a foundation for engagement across various stakeholder roles: committee chair, dean, and faculty members. Each medical school has a unique and distinct admissions process; literally no two are alike. Schools have autonomy to create their guidelines, standards, processes, and committees within legal and accreditation parameters. The faculty at the medical school are tasked under the Liaison Committee on Medical Education to establish criteria and process and select the class (Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Standards, publications, & notification forms. Faculty can influence admissions and facilitate the incorporation of more equitable, efficient, and mission-centered approaches inclusive of LHS+ individuals and communities.
