Striving to Become a Department Chair
摘要
As an LHS+ academic physician, even if you have never thought of becoming a department chair, perhaps you may want to reconsider your trajectory. If you think that the LHS+ physician-to-Latino patient ratio is abysmally low, the number of LHS+ identified department chairs is even lower. An LHS+ chair is likely to be quite familiar with the challenges and barriers that Latino patients encounter with the healthcare system, as the chair themselves probably originated from either that community or a similar one. The LHS+ chair may already have thought of solutions to some of these unique patient challenges and is in an ideal position to implement some of these solutions to improve the patient experience and patient care. Indeed, many highly qualified LHS+ physicians do not even consider the chair position, because they are simply not aware that they are viable candidates and that it is a position with which they can have a more favorable and durable impact on their patients’ health. Furthermore, they are uncertain how to proceed with the preparation and application process, in part, because there are so few LHS+ department chairs to inspire, motivate, and mentor them. This chapter outlines the roles and responsibilities of the department chair in the context of the quadripartite missions of the academic medical center and discusses personal and professional considerations that help one prepare for this important leadership position. With respect to personal qualities and motivation, LHS+ academic physicians may be further along this trajectory than one realizes, and so the purpose of this chapter is to stimulate one’s active consideration of the department chair position.
