Racism in sport is complex and manifests itself in subtle ways and as such permeates the structures through which many sports are organised, governed and reported upon by the media. Stereotypes and misrepresentation of minoritised players can have a dire impact upon their opportunities in their chosen sport. Sports journalists need to understand racism in its overt and covert forms and discrimination in sport so that they can articulate it in considered ways in their work. Normative journalism conventions often do not offer the space for consideration of racism in its many forms and focus on explicit racism. There is a fear and reluctance in the media to call out racism or address it. This fear is often the result of ignorance or more problematically concerns about being labelled racist. This chapter explains how the application of Critical Race Theory (CRT) can help journalists to articulate issues relating to racism in a nuanced manner. The chapter offers advice for sports journalists about how to conduct interviews and research their stories. CRT provides a comprehensive framework to analyse the complex ways in which race and racism intersect with power, privilege, and the media, and also offers valuable insights into the persistent racial disparities in sports journalism.
