The role of the energy sector in the modern system of international relations of Russia is particularly important for the protection of its national interests and economic prosperity, as it is a means of enforcing its geopolitical ambitions and strengthening its sovereignty. In 2018, Russia produced 555.6 million tonnes of oil and 733 billion m3 of natural gas, of which it exported 260.2 million tonnes (46.8%) and 245 billion m3 (33.4%) respectively. The reserves of the Russian Caspian Sector account for only 2% of oil and 1% of natural gas of the total reserves of the Caspian Sea.
