Contraception at Different Stages of Life: Early Ovarian Failure and Perimenopause
摘要
As is well known, estroprogestin therapy has extra-contraceptive benefits. Different conditions related to the perimenopause could benefit from the use of hormonal contraceptives, avoiding unintended pregnancies. A clinical issue that can receive, however, the same therapeutic approach is POI (primary ovarian insufficiency). Agree with ACOG women affected by this condition should receive estrogen therapy unless there is an absolute contraindication. Estrogen therapy reduces the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. A combined estrogen–progestin oral contraceptive pill (COC) is an alternative option, which has the added advantage of providing contraception. In both cases, tailoring and counseling is necessary to help women choosing the right therapy and improve compliance.
