Postpartum Contraception
摘要
Postpartum is the perfect time to discuss family planning and contraception. The choice of the contraceptive method depends on several factors, but some key points need to be highlighted. Due to its increased risk of venous thromboembolism, combined hormonal contraception is not the first choice. Intrauterine devices can be inserted in the first 48 h or after 4 weeks. Progestin-only pills and subdermal implants can be initiated or inserted at any moment. Contraceptive counseling constitutes a fundamental strategy for identifying the most appropriate method according to each patient’s individual context. Engaging in a thorough discussion of available options and adopting a shared decision-making approach between clinician and patient represent key measures for reducing the incidence of unplanned pregnancies.
