In this chapter, the reader will learn about the Internet of Things (IoT) lifecycle phases, the risks associated with each phase, and the risks associated with medical device development and data management. In addition to learning about IoT risks and lifecycle phases, the reader will gain an understanding of why IoT medical device security is required. Further, the reader will learn about the unique risks that unprotected medical devices pose to patient data, as well as the negative consequences associated with successful cybersecurity attacks. Lastly, the reader will be provided with examples and case studies of successful attacks, which will help them more easily identify potential vulnerabilities in existing medical device manufacturing processes, business systems, and deployed medical devices.
