Mapping the Internationalisation of Higher Education in the Philippines Within ASEAN

In the recent Philippine report, EDCOM 2, highlighted the issues troubling the country’s higher educationPhilippineshigher education internationalisation system, including challenges related to access to high-quality education, quality assuranceHigher educationquality assurance and internationalisation. ThisQuality assurancePhilippines higher education chapter explores the internationalisation status of the PhilippinesInternationalisationPhilippines higher education in comparison with the other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries using the World System Theory (WST). It uses multiple data sources, such asResearch collaborationbibliometric studies bibliometricInternationalisationbibliometric analysis data from SciVal under Scopus, InCites under Web of Science and other public secondary data. The findings revealed that the Philippines is at the borderline between the semi-periphery and periphery using the WST based on the six key dimensions of internationalisation: Role of Quality Assurance and Accreditation, Research Publications in Scopus and Web of Science, Research Citation, Research CollaborationQuality assurancehigher education rankings, Higher Education FundingHigher educationresearch output and funding and International University Ranking. These dimensions are crucial for enhancing the current state of the Philippine internationalisationResearch collaborationinternationalisation in higher education, particularly the research production, citation, collaboration and shaping the future direction of ASEAN to revisit and reformulate the ASEAN University Network objectives for regionalisationHigher educationregionalisation.
