This chapter summarizes the key points and concludes the book with an optimistic outlook. Although the previous chapter painted a grim picture of the status quo, this section focuses on transforming those challenges into positive, actionable steps while raising open-ended research questions to further the inquiry. We emphasize the importance of facilitating the flourishing of each human being through education, void of compulsion, as the basic building block to form a noble society. The deceptively simple question of “Why Vote?” remains a pivotal point in the democratic foundation for reaching agreement and understanding, beyond mere societal expectations or civic duty. To answer why, one must discover the true identity as the stable measure to choose, to vote, as conjectured, to vote is Be—one vote: Be. This knowing will be the bedrock of consensus in forming a harmonious society through the evolution of universal human consciousness. As we transition into the era of computational consensus, it is crucial to ground the notion of voting and agreement in their philosophical implications. Reaching computational agreement closely resembles reaching an agreement on the human plane because neither hardware nor software is developed or operated in isolation from the human condition. Consensus may further play a critical role as a cornerstone of emerging machine learning models to embody checks and balances into their constitutions. This further motivates the need for sustainable large-scale deployment of fault-tolerant consensus, encouraging the exploration of collaborative computational models that provide flexible consensus bounds without rigid assumptions. Challenging rigid theoretical models may inspire new opportunities to bridge the gap between asynchronous and partially synchronous models, which is the crux of the timeout paradox. We conclude that consensus remains an integral piece in computing to assemble fault-tolerant distributed systems, collectively forming a resilient whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

摘要
