This chapter examines how democracy is affected by the technological dimension of reglobalization, with a particular focus on the spread and innovation of information and communication technology (ICT), from the internet to artificial intelligence (AI). ICT presents both opportunities and challenges for democratic societies. While it can enhance access to information, citizen participation, and government transparency, it also raises serious concerns about data privacy, disinformation, and electoral manipulation. The internet was initially expected to strengthen democratic processes, but it has become clear that it also has significant drawbacks. The recent success of AI has sparked new fears about its political implications. This chapter offers a fresh perspective on the future of democracy in the era of reglobalization by assessing the potential challenges and opportunities posed by AI. The influence of big tech companies, their control over data, and their potential to sway public opinion highlight some of the challenges. Opportunities for democracy include AI’s potential to serve as a platform for deliberation, empower individuals and groups, increase the accessibility and inclusiveness of democratic processes, and support the administration of elections.
