Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are used in a social context. They are socio-technical systems. In this chapter we discuss some of the relationships between AI and society. The chapter contains a diversity of topics, woven with the interplay between AI and society. We begin with the question whether AI is really possible in a machine? An old question, in fact. The notion of agency follows. Then, we discuss trustworthy AI. The chapter follows with topics related to social and environmental costs of AI (energy, labor-intensive AI, art).
