This chapter reviews the motivations and principles behind the al-Jāmiʿ al-Anwar restoration. It reveals that the community’s approach, termed iḥyāʾ (bringing back to life), was seen as a religious obligation driven by the masjid’s state of kharāb (ruination) and the ẓulm (injustice) perpetrated against it. The project’s framework prioritized four core qualities of a sacred space—sanctity, status, majesty, and beauty—to distinguish it from secular monuments. The chapter shows how the community developed a restoration approach that, while aware of international standards, was more aligned with its religious values and the functional needs of a living place of worship.
