Reversal in poetic experience does not occur in a vacuum but embraces aesthetics, hermeneutics and, in special cases, literary criticism. Aesthetics engages the sensibility in a manner that cannot be considered as separate from what occurs when the understanding (re)interprets the world as other than what it appears to be initially. This conclusion examines how reversal exhibits certain traits that are crucial to literary study. First, a short modern poem is examined to foreground the importance of absence to the aesthetic appreciation of literature. This part of the discussion shows how poetry in the wake of aesthetics allows us to experience the world as shared rather than private. Second, the eight studies that comprise this book in tracing the movement from aesthetics to hermeneutics are reviewed to provide evidence of how the linguistic moment mediates between the sensibility and the world at large. Third, this exploration inevitably carries over into literary criticism, which has been shown to re-inscribe the aesthetic in a manner that exceeds the domain of analysis that was privileged in New Criticism. The relationship of poetry to literary history is then rearticulated so that the historicity of poetry can be more rigorously maintained.
