We examine voter behavior in three Michigan congressional districts in which identity politics confound party and issue preferences. Third-term Representative Rashida Tlaib is widely known for her support of Palestinian causes. She had no primary opponent in a safe Democratic district that includes a large Middle Eastern population, but also a sizable Jewish population that could threaten her hold on the 12th District in the general election. Republican John James is Michigan’s only African American in Congress, first elected in 2022. He also had no primary challenger, but represents a highly competitive district. The 10th District includes a large portion of the blue-collar but conservative Macomb County. Democrat Shri Thanedar, a wealthy Indian American businessman, represents the City of Detroit in the 13th District. He faced African American primary challengers and an African American Republican in the general election.
