Deeper in the Dark: Campaign Finance and Dark Money in the 2024 Elections
摘要
The 2024 elections set new records in campaign financing, both in terms of money raised and money spent. While plenty of this comes from traditional political action committees (PACs) and the interest groups and corporations sponsoring them, more and more is coming from large and shadowy entities like super-PACs and dark money organizations. The latter do not disclose the identities of their donors, making them attractive as pass-throughs for a few wealthy individuals to quietly move significant amounts of money to reshape American politics and reconfigure Congress ideologically. After recounting the political and legal history of how we got here, Chapter 4 examines data from the Federal Elections Commission to give a sense of the dimensions of modern campaign finance in 2024, discuss repercussions, and speculate about how campaign finance might be brought under control.
