The 2024 California Senate race offered the prospect of an open race for the first time in decades. Prominent Democrats announced early, but media coverage was dominated by Senator Dianne Feinstein’s declining health until her death in Fall 2023 and appointment of an interim replacement. The March 2024 top-two primary featured campaign spending, interest group activity, and strategies more often seen in competitive two-party general elections. Democratic Representative Adam Schiff outpaced copartisan colleagues Katie Porter and Barbara Lee. Schiff was successful in propping up long-shot Republican Steve Garvey so that Garvey claimed the second spot on the general election ballot. Schiff then cruised to victory. This chapter provides additional insights on candidate emergence, intraparty competition, and partisan trends in a state dominated by one political party. The cascading effects from House members vacating their seats to run for Senate also have national-level implications beyond California’s influence as America’s most populous state.
