Aspiration abortion is a safe procedure that can be performed in an office or in an ambulatory surgical center. It can be accomplished either by using a 60-cc handheld syringe (manual vacuum aspirator) or by using vacuum aspiration with an electric pump. These methods are commonly referred to as a “surgical abortion” and can be performed safely and effectively in an outpatient setting with local anesthesia alone or combined with light to moderate sedation (Westfall et al., Arch Fam Med. 7:559-62, 1998). Aspiration abortion and medication-induced abortion are associated with lower rates of complications than sharp curettage (dilation and curettage) and are the preferred methodologies of abortions whenever possible (World Health Organization (WHO). Abortion care guideline. WHO, Geneva, 2022).
