The Parental Journey through Autism Diagnosis: Experiences of Acceptance, Support, and Cultural Sensitivity
摘要
Receiving an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis is a profoundly challenging journey for parents, often marked by prolonged uncertainty, anxiety, and significant life shifts. This compelling chapter provides an in-depth exploration of this complex process, from initial suspicions to the crucial stage of acceptance. It delves into the dilemma of early versus delayed diagnosis, highlighting the benefits of timely intervention alongside the emotional difficulties parents face. Drawing on the Reaction to Diagnosis Interview (RDI), the chapter distinguishes between “resolved” and “unresolved” parental acceptance, illustrating how this emotional state profoundly impacts the parent-child relationship and overall well-being. Unresolved grief can hinder effective caregiving, while resolution fosters secure attachment and sensitive responses. Crucially, this work reveals the immense influence of professional involvement, emphasizing the need for empathy, clear communication, comprehensive guidance, and ongoing emotional support to navigate this period. The chapter provides vital insights and practical implications to better support parents in fostering a positive, integrated family life following an ASD diagnosis.
