Dealing With Politicians in Casual Democracies
摘要
This chapter examines how political accountability and representation function in casual democracies through two contrasting cases: the Frederiksberg mayor scandal in 2020 and the 2021 local elections in Ringwood. In Frederiksberg, a property controversy involving the Conservative mayor revealed both the potential and pitfalls of platformised scrutiny. Facebook became the main arena for public debate, generating intense engagement and polarisation, while the local newspaper remained largely silent. In Ringwood, by contrast, the election campaign unfolded with minimal information, weak participation, and low voter turnout. Together, these cases show how algorithmic visibility, informal power, and absence of professional, local journalism reshape the political order at the local level, often amplifying distrust and disengagement while exposing the fragility of democratic representation.
