New Data on the Crystal Chemistry of VSMs and Their Application in Geology

In terms of the modular approach (Ferraris et al. 2014), the basis of the crystal structures of VSMs can be described as a combination of relatively rigid modules (rods) of the grossular structure [Ca10(Al6Mg2)8(SiO4)10]2+ and [Ca9Fe3+(Si2O7)4(OH)O]6− modules containing Si2O7 diorthogroups (below, “vesuvianite” modules), which are connected with each other via common vertices of the Y2 [Al(OH)2]44+ octahedra (Fig. 4.1).
