Enabling users to interact with databases using natural language is a problem as old as relational databases themselves. Through the years, a lot of interest has been shown in developing such systems both from academia and industry, showing the importance of the problem. However, the rapid advancements in deep learning are bringing a new wave of research, promising to open up data for more users. This chapter introduces Natural Language Interfaces to Databases and provides a brief history of the field. Additionally, a primer of neural networks mentioned throughout the book is given, along with an overview of related research fields on answering natural language questions over different types of data.
