The proliferation of issues of preserving wetlands has become a cumbersome process for Indian cities. However, the sensitivity of the issue of wetland conversation is humongous. This chapter examines the multifaceted process of wetland degradation in urban India, scrutinizing the intersection of various contributory factors. A comprehensive review of the global discourse on wetland conservation reveals diverse strategies employed across different contexts, highlighting both successes and gaps. This research article underpins the criticality of the emerging factors for wetland conversation including ineffective policy implementation, administrative inertia, political indifference, and lack of public awareness. Despite these various policies and administrative structures, the efficacy of wetland preservation in Indian cities remains questionable. Urban expansion, industrialization, and agricultural encroachment further exacerbate the depletion of wetlands, often due to a disconnect between policy and ground realities. The study underscores the need for a paradigm shift from reactive to proactive conservation strategies, emphasizing adaptive management practices that can accommodate the dynamic nature of urban wetlands. By addressing the systemic issues and leveraging the strengths of existing policies, it is posited that we can make significant strides in safeguarding urban wetlands for future generations.

摘要
