The Role of Microcredentials in Future STEM Professional Learning and Development
摘要
This chapter provides current insights and future directions on microcredentials, focusing on STEM disciplines in education and the workforce. It discusses the role of microcredentials in reshaping STEM education and industry, and how these changes are already in motion in some areas while still being planned in others. As industries evolve with technological innovations and changing workflows, workers need to rapidly upskill and reskill to stay relevant. STEM fields face similar pressures, especially given the rapid pace of technological and research advancements. Microcredentials offer a viable solution for stakeholders seeking flexible and relevant learning pathways. In this chapter, we operationalize microcredentials as targeted, stackable, and shareable qualifications that allow learners to demonstrate achievements recognized by employers and educational institutions. We explore the future of STEM microcredentials by analyzing trends, emerging technologies, and key theoretical frameworks shaping professional learning. With increasing demand for lifelong and life-wide learning, microcredentials are positioned as essential tools for continuous development among STEM educators and professionals.
