Understanding survivors’ cultural backgrounds is essential for providing trauma-informed, culturally based intervention (TICBI). Recognizing the connection between cultural perception and trauma response is a crucial aspect of this intervention. It allows practitioners to view trauma responses as unique experiences shaped by survivors’ backgrounds and beliefs, influencing their interpretation, meaning-making, and help-seeking processes. This awareness helps prevent service gaps and encourages mindfulness about how trauma is expressed across different cultures and its effects on healing. TICBI requires service providers to utilize their disciplinary skills and cultural knowledge to avoid cultural bias and personal assumptions while promoting healing. TICBI is founded on the premise that all humans share the same brain structure at birth; however, they are cultural beings shaped by lifelong experiences that inform their subjective views. This chapter will explore how culture influences survivors’ perceptions of traumatic experiences and how the expression of trauma-related distress, along with centuries-old traditional and holistic health practices, contributes to their well-being.
