Building a Provincial Microcredential Framework in Alberta, Canada—A Case Study
摘要
For over a decade, the adoption of microcredentials, among employers, post-secondary institutions (PSIs), and learners have been rapidly increasing. Since post-secondary education in Canada is a provincial responsibility, each province and its PSIs have pursued different approaches to building cohesive microcredential frameworks, policies, and funding models. In Alberta, PSIs have created a unified microcredential framework for the province. At the national level, development towards a pan-Canadian microcredential framework that facilitates alignment and supports student mobility is underway. In this chapter, an overview will be provided of the efforts to establish a national (pan-Canadian) and provincial definition of microcredentials and how this work has shaped the foundations and framework of microcredentials in Alberta. The analysis will conclude with an examination of the Alberta PSI Microcredential Forum’s role in leading the development of the provincial microcredential framework and its impact on other microcredential initiatives and science, technology, engineering and mathematics programming.
