In the aftermath of 9/11, the West, particularly the United States, has faced a series of challenges that have strained its global leadership. The 2008 global financial crisis, rising issues such as immigration and violence, Brexit, internal U.S. tensions, Russia’s assertiveness in Eastern Europe, China’s expanding influence, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, the Gaza conflict, and the growing threats of global warming and environmental pollution have all contributed to increasing uncertainty and a perceived decline in the Western-led order. The diminishing U.S. presence in the Middle East has paved the way for greater regional cooperation and realignment, weakening the once-dominant influence of the U.S. administration. In this evolving landscape, numerous states in the Middle East have begun normalizing relations, resulting in a complex mix of regional collaboration and competition that could potentially avoid negative chaos. However, the region continues to face three significant challenges: water scarcity, the spread of drugs, and ongoing violence and terrorism. This chapter examines these dynamics, exploring how the key players in the Middle East, each with their distinct agendas, are navigating this shifting regional and global chessboard to promote their interests.
