This chapter motivates the theoretical study of low-latency communication and introduces the development of recent advances in information theory. In particular, the history of the theoretical foundation of low-latency communication is introduced, starting from the pioneering papers of Yushkevich in 1953 for source coding and Straseen in 1962 for channel coding until very recent studies of 2025. The scope, significance, and organization of the present book are discussed in detail. Finally, the notation and mathematical tools used throughout the book are introduced. The readers can gain a very good understanding of the motivation and history of low-latency communication by reading this chapter.

摘要

This chapter motivates the theoretical study of low-latency communication and introduces the development of recent advances in information theory. In particular, the history of the theoretical foundation of low-latency communication is introduced, starting from the pioneering papers of Yushkevich in 1953 for source coding and Straseen in 1962 for channel coding until very recent studies of 2025. The scope, significance, and organization of the present book are discussed in detail. Finally, the notation and mathematical tools used throughout the book are introduced. The readers can gain a very good understanding of the motivation and history of low-latency communication by reading this chapter.
