The last two decades have witnessed a worrisome trend, the erosion of democracy in many parts of the world. Why have long lasting and newer democracies ranging from India to the United States, Hungary to Mexico, and Turkey to Thailand become less democratic? Of course, there are many reasons why democratic governance declines. These include increased polarization, crises such as economic and health crises, and elites, who do not adhere to the democratic consensus anymore. Among these factors, one crucial factor is citizens’ satisfaction with democracy (SWD). Citizens are the backbone of democracy; if they no longer support democracy, autocrats might have an easier way to hollow out the rules and procedures of a free state. By fostering a multidisciplinary dialogue and rigorous empirical work, this edited book aims to significantly advance our understanding of the supply and demand factors responsible for citizens’ SWD. It is our aim to equip scholars, policymakers, and the public with knowledge of a pressing issue of our time.
