Stepping away from the immediacy of the classroom, this chapter considers the humanities as a profession and the role educators play as laborers within the higher education industrial complex. This chapter interrogates the role time and speedspeed play in our working conditions and the changes that are being proposed to those conditions. This chapter suggests that we think about the way “incapacitating technocapitalismtechnocapitalism” might be a framework that imperils our most essential work: teachingteaching critical readingcritical reading and writingwriting skills.
