Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs and organ systems, including the oral cavity. Dental implants are being increasingly used as a method of tooth replacement therapy, however, their placement in SLE complicated by unique factors including poor osseointegration and implant failure. In the review paper here, the dental implant complications of SLE patients are considered with focus on systemic complications, drug effect, and oral status. The review synthesizes available literature in a bid to offer a complete clinical guide for practitioners, focusing on interdisciplinary management. This study emphasizes the importance of patient-specific treatment planning for the best chance of successful implants, whilst limiting complications.
