Use of Industry 4.0 to Promote Sustainable Food Production and Consumption (SDG 12)

The growing pressures of climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity have underscored the urgency of transitioning toward sustainable food systems. This chapter explores the transformative role of Industry 4.0 technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, big data analytics, robotics, and 3D printing, in supporting Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), which advocates for responsible consumption and production. Through a multidisciplinary lens, the chapter demonstrates how these technologies enhance supply chain transparency, optimize resource use, reduce food loss and waste, and promote circular economy practices. Recent advances highlight how AI and IoT enable Precision Agriculture and predictive maintenance, while blockchain ensures food traceability and consumer trust. Despite this technological progress, the chapter critically examines the economic, technical, social, and policy-related barriers to adoption, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It calls for inclusive strategies, public–private partnerships, and global cooperation to unlock the full potential of these innovations for sustainable agri-food systems. Ultimately, the chapter argues that a more integrated, ethical, and scalable implementation of Industry 4.0 is crucial not only to achieve SDG 12 but also to foster a resilient, low-carbon, and equitable global food system.
