The global food sector faces urgent sustainability challenges that demand transformative solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Industry 4.0 technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and digital twins, have played a crucial role in enhancing efficiency, transparency, and resource optimization across food supply chains, leading to the emergence of the concept of “Food Sustainability 4.0”, as discussed in the previous chapters of this book. However, while these technologies have improved operational performance, they may fall short in fully addressing the human-centric, ethical, and systemic dimensions of sustainability. In response, this chapter envisions the future concept of “Food Sustainability 5.0”, which is stemmed from the evolution from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0, and reflects a shift toward technology that serves both people and the planet. Thus, this forward-looking chapter explores this future evolution from Food Sustainability 4.0 to 5.0 by examining key enabling technologies, early indicators, and the anticipated implications for sustainable food systems. It also outlines the enabling technologies, such as the Internet of Everything (IoE), generative AI, cobots, etc., that are expected to drive this next phase of sustainable, inclusive, and human-centered agri-food innovation, positioning Food Sustainability 5.0 as a forward-looking vision rather than a current trend.
