The Lion Cub, the Witcher, and the War: Ciri and Gendered Violence
摘要
This chapter examines Ciri’s narrative exposure to violence and trauma. With examples from The Witcher novels, the Witcher 3 videogame, and the Netflix series, this is the first work to holistically unpack how Ciri’s arc is impacted by these. Drawing on theories of violence and ideas of post-traumatic growth, the chapter explores how gendered violence shapes Ciri’s development. It posits that the books foreground trauma and sexual violence as formative experiences, highlighting the vulnerability of girls in patriarchal and classist systems. The video game, in contrast, reframes Ciri’s development through empowerment and support, while the Netflix series attempts to balance both. The chapter calls for writers to consider the purpose and detail of depictions of violence against girls, their potential to contribute to its normalisation, the risks of voyeuristic pleasure, or the likelihood of prompting audiences to relive personal trauma.
