AI Through a Bilingual Lens: Unveiling Metaphors in Italian and English AI Discourses
摘要
This chapter proposes a comparative study of metaphors used in Artificial Intelligence (AI) discourse in both Italian and English, uncovering how linguistic and cultural differences shape public and academic perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI). Using conceptual metaphor theory and Type Hierarchy Analysis (THA), it examines how metaphors such as “AI is a black box”, “AI is a mirror”, and “AI is a modern oracle” influence attitudes towards AI. It is shown that while English metaphors often emphasise functionality, efficiency, and technological advancement, Italian metaphors lean towards philosophical and ethical considerations, reflecting broader cultural concerns. By analysing these metaphorical frameworks, we discuss their implications for shaping public discourse, cross-cultural communication, and the design and governance of AI systems.
