The chapter examines figurative representations of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), discussing its conceptualisations either as a machine or as a humanlike entity. Through an analysis of discussions on educational issues featured on the Estonian science popularisation portal novaator.err.ee, we examine the evolving metaphoric language used to describe GenAI and its impact on teaching and academic writing practices. The representation of GenAI varies from a conquering warrior to a domesticated helper, GenAI being described as a “metaphoric robot” to chat with, a volume knob to manipulate, a baking oven to handle, etc. Emphasising the modelling power of conceptual metaphors, we also analyse their deliberate pedagogical and heuristic use in media discourse. To problematize the discussed threats and expectations within a broader cultural context, we employ a case of a creative visual metaphor, which embodied the media and academic discussions through an ad hoc adaptation of a classic text, Sophocles’Antigone.

摘要
