This chapter examines the role of newsmagazine covers in constructing visions of the future. It focuses on four covers published in 2023 in L’Espresso, TIME, and Visão, adopting a multimodal critical discourse analysis approach. Magazine covers function as spaces of temporalization, weaving complex discourses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its anticipated impacts. Drawing on future and media studies, the chapter contends that magazine covers are more than static, time-bound images. Instead, they actively participate in constructing cultural narratives about AI and the future, shaping how people envisage the future and form expectations. Additionally, the chapter argues that media hold the potential to challenge linear and mainstream ideas about the societal impacts of AI, highlighting the media’s responsibility to encourage critical examination of the uses and pervasiveness of AI.

摘要
