Cost-Benefit Analysis of Integrating a PET-CT Service in a High Specialty Hospital in Mexico

The High Specialty Regional Hospital of Ixtapaluca (HRAEI), a key reference center for oncology, cardiology, and neurology, lacks a PET-CT system—an essential imaging modality for precise diagnostics. This study evaluates the feasibility of acquiring a PET-CT system through a cost-benefit analysis, considering clinical impact, financial viability, and integration within the existing healthcare network. A supply-demand analysis was conducted, estimating the patient volume requiring PET-CT studies based on epidemiological data and the hospital’s area of influence. The market research identified suitable suppliers and infrastructure requirements, while the economic assessment determined the investment’s profitability using key indicators such as Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Return on Investment (ROI). Results suggest that while the initial investment is significant, the projected financial return and enhanced diagnostic capabilities justify the acquisition. Sensitivity analysis highlighted risk factors, including operational costs and radiopharmaceutical logistics, underscoring the importance of strategic planning. Ultimately, this study supports the integration of PET-CT technology at HRAEI, improving timely diagnosis and optimizing healthcare service delivery.
