Strategy for Occupational Accident Prevention in the Clinical Engineering Service

Data from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment indicate that, in 2024, 724,000 workers were involved in occupational accidents. Of these cases, 10% were workers from Healthcare Establishments (HE), representing the highest incidence by sector. This paper presents the risks to which Clinical Engineering teams may be exposed within healthcare environments, the applicable Regulatory Standards for risk control and prevention, and strategies for risk mitigation. To enhance the safety of Clinical Engineering (CE) activities in healthcare settings, an Interdisciplinary Training Program was developed for the education of Clinical Engineering professionals. This program addresses the entire technological process associated with healthcare procedures. Occupational safety is treated as a key topic within this context, requiring additional training to ensure the safe execution of professional duties. Specialized CE laboratories and procedures were implemented to simulate real-world scenarios experienced by professionals in the field. Through the development and validation of these procedures, combined with audits and supervision, it is possible to mitigate the inherent risks associated with CE activities. By training highly qualified professionals, risks can be minimized, safer outcomes can be delivered, and the overall technological processes can be optimized ultimately contributing to more reliable and secure healthcare practices.
