Translation of Prenatal Medical Conduct in Terms of Computer Specifications

Prenatal care has significantly reduced perinatal morbidity and mortality. However, there is still room for improvement in the timely detection of high-risk pregnancies and in ensuring treatment adherence. Telematics offers new opportunities for patient empowerment, close monitoring, and support. We present a method for translating prenatal care guidelines into computational specifications using flowcharts. These specifications are intended for the implementation of an innovative medical informatics system called Personalized Perinatal Follow up (SEPEPE), designed according to the same principles as the Perinatal Information System (SIP). As a diagnostic aid during medical check ups, SEPEPE assigns each pregnant woman to one of twelve pathological profiles or a low-risk profile. For each profile, SEPEPE generates a RecetApp®一a mobile-based tool consisting of logical sequences of counseling, referral, counter-referral, and reminders, tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Based on clinical guidelines, we developed twelve flowcharts for programming each RecetApp®. Installed on the patient’s phone during a medical visit, RecetApp® extends the patient-physician relationship by enabling timely, interactive follow-up according to prenatal care standards. SEPEPE captures data, texts, and patient responses prompted by RecetApp® at key stages of pregnancy. This information is then available to healthcare providers during the next follow-up visit and can be included into the electronic medical record. This approach enhances pregnancy documentation with real-time, first-hand information gathered by the patient in daily life, to improve treatment adherence and maternal health outcomes.
