Updating NEFROVOL with 3D Slicer for Polycystic Kidney Volume Determination and 3D Reconstruction

Accurate assessment of kidney volume is critical for monitoring progression in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). NEFROVOL, a software tool that reconstructs three-dimensional renal models from parallel 2D ultrasound slices, offers a low-cost and non-invasive alternative to MRI and CT volumetry but relies on time-consuming manual segmentation. This study evaluates the integration of NEFROVOL into 3D Slicer, an open-source platform with advanced segmentation, visualization, and export capabilities. A narrative review of methodologies and potential synergies is presented, proposing a workflow encompassing DICOM import, contour refinement, volume calculation, clinical reporting, and STL export for 3D printing. The integration aims to reduce operator workload, improve segmentation accuracy, and enhance clinical reporting. Future validation studies are recommended to quantify performance gains.
